Superstition Mountains | Arizona
Amrit & Yousef
A few days of color, tradition, family, heat, black tie, and portraits after dark.Sunrise to black tie
From a desert sunrise to an evening in black tie.
Amrit and Yousef’s photographs began with a sunrise engagement session on their wedding day. A quiet desert setting gave us time for portraits before the celebration.
Across the celebration, their photographs moved from Mehndi, Maiyan, and Jaggo at Amrit’s family home to a ceremony near the Superstition Mountains and a black-tie reception.

Palette
Marigold, rose, ivory, soft blue, black tie, and desert dusk.
At home
Celebrating at the home where Amrit grew up.
The family backyard held the Mehndi, Maiyan, and Jaggo celebrations. Photographing these traditions in the place where Amrit grew up gave the gathering a personal connection to her childhood.
Bright flowers, henna, family, music, and dancing filled the space. There was something to notice in every direction.

Before the ceremony
A ceremony against the Superstition Mountains.
The mountains gave the ceremony a sweeping Arizona backdrop. Closer in, the photographs were about the couple and their families.
I wanted both perspectives: the scale of the setting and the expressions of the people gathered there.

The ceremony
Making room for the day to change.
The Arizona heat meant shortening the ceremony and taking a break to cool down. Everyone adapted, and the celebration continued.
The care people showed each other mattered more than keeping to the original schedule.

Sometimes the most meaningful part of a wedding is how people look after one another.
Cool air, white curtains
White curtains, soft light, a different kind of portrait.
Inside, we used white divider curtains as a backdrop. The fabric and light gave these portraits a quieter feel after the outdoor ceremony.
Finding a photograph in an unexpected place is part of the work I enjoy most. A simple background gave Amrit and Yousef room to be the focus.

After dark
Portraits after sunset.
As the temperature dropped, we made portraits after dark. The evening light brought a different mood to the photographs before the black-tie reception.
The finished gallery moves between the desert, the family home, the ceremony, and the evening celebration.
Together, the photographs hold the range of the gathering and the people who made it personal.
